During the storage of RBCs, a number of biochemical, morphological, and physiological changes (Storage Lesions) occur that negatively affect their post transfusion performance such as:

  • Reduced 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG)
  • Reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
  • Increased haemolysis
  • Increased oxidative stress


These changes can be minimized or eliminated by inclusion of an additive solution in the RBC storage bags and thus, sustain the functionality of the RBCs during their 42 day shelf life.  However, the currently marketed additive solutions fail to maintain the oxygen carrying capacity of the RBCs (measured by the level of 2,3 DPG) for longer than 12-14 days.  

Development of an RBC additive solution that would maintain cellular energy metabolism, preserve ATP, and limit or reverse storage lesions would be of considerable value to transfusion medicine and could help make RBC transfusion safer and more effective.

Viacell has developed such a proprietary additive solution (VC007) which has been designed to impact current clinical practice by enhancing oxygen delivery to the tissues and reducing red cell storage lesions throughout the shelf life of stored RBCs.
